The Spanish government is facing a massive scandal and growing criticism after allegedly using EU recovery funds to finance pensions and other regular social spending. According to @POLITICOEurope and other European media outlets, the European Court of Auditors has raised concerns over the transfer of billions of euros from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), which was originally intended for post-pandemic reforms and strategic investments. Criticism is coming mainly from the so-called “frugal” EU member states such as the Netherlands, Sweden, and Austria, which have long demanded stricter oversight of European finances. Several MEPs described the use of these funds for ordinary budget expenditures as “unacceptable.” At the same time, Spain is already facing multiple investigations linked to the alleged misuse of EU funds in the so-called Koldo corruption scandal and other pandemic-related affairs. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) is investigating several of these cases.
