We have just concluded the European Parliament’s @EP_BudgControl mission to Greece, focused on allegations concerning the misuse of European agricultural funds. Our task was not to conduct political campaigns or deliver political verdicts. Our responsibility was to establish facts, assess the management of EU funds and ensure that European taxpayers’ money is properly protected. During the mission, we met with representatives of the Greek government, oversight authorities, stakeholders from the agricultural sector, journalists and other relevant actors. Our objective was straightforward: to assess whether EU funds were managed in accordance with the rules and whether adequate measures have been taken to address identified shortcomings. European funds belong to European citizens. Every euro must be spent transparently, efficiently and lawfully. Whenever there are credible concerns about fraud or misuse, the European Parliament has a duty to investigate. I would like to thank all members of the delegation, the CONT Secretariat, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Athens and everyone who contributed to the mission. Protecting European taxpayers’ money is not a political issue. It is a matter of responsibility.
