Russia is currently suffering some of the heaviest losses since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. What is changing on the battlefield is not only the scale of personnel losses but also the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian strikes against Russia’s critical infrastructure. Ukraine is no longer focused solely on destroying Russian troops and equipment at the front. It is systematically targeting the economic and logistical backbone that allows the Kremlin to sustain its war effort. Russian oil infrastructure has become one of the primary targets. Over the past six months alone, more than 150 attacks have been carried out against refineries, fuel depots, pumping stations, storage facilities and other energy assets. These strikes are increasingly affecting Russia’s ability to process and transport fuel while simultaneously reducing state revenues that finance military operations. The impact extends far beyond the immediate damage. Every destroyed refinery, every disrupted railway hub and every ammunition depot set ablaze forces Moscow to divert resources away from the front line. Russia is finding that maintaining its war machine is becoming increasingly expensive and complicated. At the same time, Russian forces continue to experience exceptionally high casualty rates. Despite ongoing recruitment campaigns and financial incentives for volunteers, the Kremlin is paying an ever-higher price in manpower and equipment for relatively limited territorial gains. Ukraine’s strategy has evolved into a war of attrition aimed at weakening Russia’s capacity to wage war in the long term. By striking military infrastructure, logistics networks and the energy sector deep inside Russian territory, Kyiv is demonstrating that the battlefield no longer ends at the front line. The war is increasingly reaching the very foundations of Russia’s military and economic power.
